A CONVERSATION WITH GRANDPA

A CONVERSATION WITH GRANDPA

I dream of you a lot, waking up certain you’re still here,

Then I realize you’ve been gone for over seven years,

There are days I miss your laughter,

I hope you carried it on into the hereafter,

If I know you, on Sundays there’s a special halo you wear,

Different from your work halo, this one you take great care,

I still feel like I can converse with you,

I know it sounds silly but it’s true,

How have I been you ask from above?

I have my days but I’m better now, in fact, I found a new love,

Things are definitely different around here without you,

You were the voice of reason, the one we sought guidance through,

More importantly you were many of ours best friend,

I always enjoyed the times together we got to spend,

Oh, thanks for being there with me through my days so taut,

I suppose now you can see all the demons I’ve fought,

Yeah I know, I still have far to go,

I may have won some battles but the war is not over, this I know,

As I read the headstone and what’s engraved,

As always, thanks for your sacrifice years ago for the home of the brave,

You’ll always be a hero in my eyes,

Well I best get going, for incoming are some darkened skies,

But I’ll be by again next week for some more time between you and me,

Until then rest in peace Paul Eugene Skaggs, April 1923 to November 2003.
