THE PASSION
For at that Last Supper He spoke to His fellow men,
He gave instructions, predicted betrayal and asked to be remembered within,
They shall all fall away that night, He said on the road to Gethsemane,
Peter’s refusal led Him to say, “Three times before the cock crows, you’ll deny me.”
In the Garden at Gethsemane, as the disciples slept, Jesus prayed alone,
During which time He was betrayed by Judas, His own,
For Judas led in an arresting party so that He may be taken to the high priest,
He was struck in the face and spat upon by the court, like a savage beast,
Sentenced to death He was sent to Pontius Pilate,
Amongst the mob, accusations followed Peter; yet three times he denied it,
Then the cock crowed and he remembered Jesus’ words,
Pilate, the Roman governor, determined His guilt was absurd,
Pilate gave the Jewish leaders and crowds a choice,
Either save Jesus or Barabbas the criminal, came from his voice,
Pilate asks Jesus if He was King of the Jews and His reply, “So you say.”
Now condemned by Pilate, He was flogged in the most vicious of ways,
Jesus was mocked and ridiculed, placed on His head a crown of thorns,
Amidst the mob most certainly was Satan to join in His scorn,
He was spat upon, whipped, stripped and beaten while bearing His own cross,
To a hillside on Golgotha to be executed on this sad day of loss,
Nailed to that cross were His hands and feet,
The crown of thorns pushed down on his head as the blood began to seep,
On each side of Him were two criminals, one who mocked, the other believed,
The one who believed begged for a place in Heaven where he could be relieved,
In the ninth hour the skies grew dark, Jesus let out a cry,
“Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” ("My God, why have you forsaken me? Why?”)
As He died on that cross, a soldier pierced His side with a spear,
“Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” His words I hold dear,
You see, He died for our sins so that whoever believes shall have everlasting life,
All the pain, the ridicule was done for you and me, we were His strife,
On the third day, Jesus rose from his tomb and left those guarding it a mystery,
From crucifixion to resurrection, it was all for you and me,
A sign of God’s love and compassion, His Son took the fall,
So that transgressions and sins may be forgiven for all.
