THE GREATEST MAN I EVER KNEW (HAPPY BIRTHDAY)
Eighty-eight years ago your spirit was born on this day,
Oh how I wish I could have walked beside you every step of the way,
This should be a happy day, one where we remember the stories you’d tell,
I can recall laughing at your tales of how you once raised hell,
I loved listening to your accounts of the war and the places you’d been,
All are fond memories that I carry within,
I could always distinguish between stories of truth and the cock-and-bull,
You can’t tell me that mouse spoke to you one winter’s night I’m no fool,
I loved to hear your laugh as you sat and watched television in your chair,
You were a great man Grandpa, always there,
You were an honest man, who’d always share,
And though you were tough skinned, you were a sympathetic man, who cared,
Qualities seldom found in folks these days,
I speak for all of your family when I say we miss you in so many ways,
As I said before, we should be happy today with memories of you and not mourn,
For on this day, eighty-eight years ago, the greatest man I’ve ever met was born,
Your spirit to this day is alive and well I feel it all around me,
Today is a celebration of your life and we all should be thankful and happy,
That we each were a part of it,
With that said, it pretty well sums up the heart of it.
One last thing Grandpa, Happy Birthday to you,
The greatest man I ever knew.
