SUMMER’S DUSK

SUMMER’S DUSK

She bit my lip and hinted she loved me,

I nibbled her lobe and confided it be,

We sat side by side at the edge of the dock,

Feet dangling in the water, hands interlocked,

The sun began to set on that warm summer day,

Wind across the lake rippled the reflections of its rays,

She looked at me with a shy smile,

The soft breeze blowing sprigs of hair across her face all the while,

Words were few and far between,

Mattered it not, for her face said everything,

She leaned her head upon my shoulder,

And snuggled a little closer as the breeze became colder,

My mind would drift into tomorrow on occasion,

Yet never ignoring her beauty and the power of her subtle persuasions,

Day evolved into night before our eyes,

Care we did not, for soon would be our goodbyes,

There’s a certain romance of a summer’s dusk,

I promised her, and in me she did trust,

That despite the miles of our separation,

I’d return to her someday with full dedication,

This journey I was to embark on was far greater than she could comprehend,

She whispered regardless, “I’ll wait for you until the bitter end”,

Once more, she bit my lip and hinted she loved me,

With a tear in her eye, I held her close as could be,

I spoke these words soft and terse,

“I will find you again someday” was my only verse,

I set out that night not knowing what lay ahead,

Ever since, she has haunted my heart and filled a mind full of illusions in my head.
