MY FIRST TRUE LOVE

MY FIRST TRUE LOVE

Overlooking the levee,

She and I sat snuggled together in that beat up Chevy,

Truck windows down, we felt the spring breeze whisk by,

It was an ideal night, not a cloud in the sky,

Stars abound in the depths of the universe,

With a ring in my pocket, I had the lines rehearsed,

I was just waiting for the perfect time,

No rush though, as we discussed the oddities of the mind,

In the midst of conversation we paused as the radio played our song,

Her head on my lap and feet out the window, she now belong,

Looking down at her I stroked her hair with my fingers,

Such a moment I wish had lingered,

As our song ended, I reached into my pocket for that ring,

God, with the stars in her eyes she looked amazing,

She rose up from my lap and smiled at me,

I didn’t need to ask the question, on her face I could clearly see,

Yet I asked anyway,

When she said yes, it took my breath away,

I promised her a lifetime of happiness and love,

She looked at me and said I was her angel sent from above,

We talked in the cab of my truck for hours on end,

She was more than a lover, she was my best friend,

She said she needed to get home before her daddy did wake,

Little did she know, I already asked for his daughter’s hand to take,

But it was getting late so I obliged her wish,

She said she loved me and sealed it with a kiss,

So I fired up that old truck and we headed back into town,

We both had no idea of what was about to go down,

On the road home I lost control of the wheel, I tried to get it back, I swear I tried,

They said when I hit that tree on the moment of impact she died,

So did a piece of my heart,

Death tore the two of us apart,

I still visit her grave, for she was my first true love,

And each time I view her headstone I tell her she is my angel from above.
