THE BROKEN SMILE

THE BROKEN SMILE

Why does she wear that broken smile?
Oh how I wish she’d let me fix it for just a while.
Someone must have hurt her heart in some way,
Though she sheds no tears, crying eyes she does convey.

I wish I could tell her there’s no need for this sorrow,
A better day will find her tomorrow.
As she sits there on the park bench watching the world go by,
I continue to ask myself why?

Why is she so saddened by the weight of her world?
What has condemned the smile of this beautiful girl?
These are only questions she has the answers to,
My curiosity has me pondering of what to do.

Should I leave her in such a sad state to stay?
Or should I approach her along my passing way?
As I near her I search for the words to speak,
I too become desolate and weak.

I regain enough strength to sit down beside her,
Only close enough so that she knows I’m there,
I clear my throat and she looks up at me,
And in all my years I have never seen such beauty.

And so I ask, “Why have you been wearing such a broken smile?”
With an unexpected grin she replies, “I’ve been waiting for you to fix it all this while.”
